The Pearl-fect New Jewelry Trend: Men in Pearls

urbanemarket

Pearls have been a staple in women’s jewelry since the early 20th century, but many don’t know that pearls were originally worn by men. Dating back to the Roman Empire, pearls were originally respected as a symbol of wealth and status, distinguishing the elites from the common folk. Some cultures such as Asian Polynesian warriors wore pearl amulets as a symbol of ferociousness and power.

Now, pearls have re-emerged in men’s wardrobes as a fashion statement, amongst hip-hop and pop culture icons, being worn by some of the most stylish male influencers and musicians such as A$AP Rocky, Jaden Smith, and Pharrell Williams.

As the pearl jewelry trend continues to grow, designers are creating more interesting pieces and incorporating pearls with other materials such as chains, crystals, and colorful beads to make more playful styles that can be layered with other jewelry pieces or stand-alone to show one’s personality.

The RealReal detailed in their 2023 Luxury Consignment Report that shoppers’ interest in pearls, especially pearl bracelets, more than doubled from the third to the fourth quarter of 2022.

The buy now – pay later giant Klarna also found pearl jewelry trending as they reported an online uptick of pearl necklace sales by +32% compared to an average month in 2021, with pearl earrings as the third top-trending Regencycore item of 2022.

Also, according to a survey conducted by the Cultured Pearl Association of America in 2021, 44% of men aged 18-35 and 33% of men aged 35-54 are interested in purchasing pearl jewelry. It looks like this pearl trend is on the rise with no sign of turning back.

Here are some ways to wear pearls:

Classic: Wear a pearl necklace or a single pearl on a chain or string with a classic t-shirt for an elevated, yet relaxed look.

Mix & Match: Wear multiple pearl necklaces, long or short with colorful beads or crystals for a creative, bohemian look that speaks to your individuality.

Modern & Edgy: Layer a few pearl necklaces with gold or silver chains for a personalized touch.

Alternative Styles: There are more ways to wear pearls than just on your neck. Try out pearl earrings, bracelets, anklets, or wallet chains to add more versatility to your look.

Pearls are no longer seen as jewelry for women. They’re also a unique and sophisticated accessory for the modern and stylish man. A gem for all genders, pearls are versatile and timeless, making them the best go-to choice for jewelry in general. No matter who you are, or where you're going – pearls are an all-around staple.
